Examples of paving in different shades and textures, a tactic which provides an interesting contrast of restful and vibrant tones.
In recent years, one of the most exciting projects in the region was the Millennium Commission's programme to enhance Priddy's Hard as part of the renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour. GMC secured three of the five contracts on the Gosport side, to improve the promenade and the Millennium Walk leading from the Explosives Museum at Priddy's Hard to the Submarine Museum, Haslar.
A dramatic centre-piece was envisaged along the route to create a talking point and a major attraction. The award winning solution was unique and remarkable: a large (34 metre diameter) sun dial which also forms an amphitheatre for outdoor performances. We constructed the main auditorium using large pre-cast concrete units with specially pigmented finishes, and we used yorkstone block paving setts and slabs in paved areas, including pedestrian footways.
An important feature is an eye catching 'Millennium Gateway' and canopy which we erected in steelwork and blue glass (the latter at a cost of £2O,OOO). It provides an entrance to the proposed extension of the Gosport marina and promenade.
The whole scheme complements other Millennium funded schemes in the area.
